Adopt-a-lots are vacant land leased to a neighbor or community group who agree to care for the land for at least one year, and in return are able to use the lot to create a garden or enjoy more green space in their neighborhood. Currently, the Adopt-a-Lot fee is just $20 per year.
Since the Land Bank started in 2010, vacant lots around Kalamazoo County have been put to creative uses by people that live, work, or play in these neighborhoods. The program offers opportunities to take vacant and unused space and make it more beautiful, more productive, and activate it on a temporary basis until the lot is ready for sale or redevelopment. Adopt-a-lots are also available for lease to neighbors who are unable or ineligible to purchase through the Side Lot program.
If you are interested in adopting a vacant parcel in your community, please identify a property that interests you through the Property Search, then fill out an application. Applications are available in English or Espanol. If you have questions, please contact the Program Coordinator at (269) 762-6191.
If you are a part of a community garden, or are interested in starting a community garden, you can find more resources and support through the Common Ground Network.
